As a Philosophy Group we are learning as we go about philosophers and philosophy. Our discussions are wide ranging, often including current affairs, and we enjoy sharing each other's views in a friendly and informal setting. We stop for coffee and biscuits around half way through each session. The book we used as a starting point is "Philosophy Bites" by David Edmunds and Nigel Warburton We take one chapter at a time, finding out all we can about the philosopher featured and then exchanging ideas about the issues raised.
New members are always welcome. Please contact Gillian Brown via the Link above if you are interested in joining the group.
For some time now we have based our monthly discussion on a chapter from the book "Philosophy Bites’," followed by "Philosophy Bites Back", which look at various aspects of the work of well known philosophers. We are now starting on "Philosophy Bites Again"– 27 Leading Thinkers on 27 intriguing topics: the first three units of which discuss Joy and Pain.
We read the following chapter for homework with some members researching around the text. The meeting starts by listening to the relevant podcast, followed by a group discussion which does try to keep to the subject, but often drifts off into general matters, current affairs or personal experience (in a light-hearted way).
"Philosophy Bites", "Philosophy Bites Back", and "Philosophy Bites Again" are available in paperback or in Kindle format. All titles, which are authored by David Edmunds and Nigel Warburton., are Published by Oxford University Press.
