Towards the end of the May Branch Meting, Edna and John Southey indicated that they would be interested in launching a Mahjong Group and asked for a show of hands to establish interest. Great interest was indeed shown, as demonstrated by many raised hands. A booking was made with the Town Hall, for Mahjong meetings to take place between 10.00am to 12.00noon in the Council Chamber on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. As always a small contribution will be needed, depending on numbers, to cover the cost of the room.

The first meeting of the new Mahjong Group did indeed take place on Wednesday 10th June. Nine eager new trainee members were introduced to the alien Mahjong playing pieces, and were taken through the esoteric, read complicated. rules of the game. Apparently the game starts by rebuilding the Great Wall of China, not to mention using such playing pieces as Bamboos, Winds, Characters, and moves to achieve known by easy to remember names such as Pung and Kong, and of course many more.

In spite of the above, a good time was certainly had by all, although the learning curve does seem a tad steep. In fact it was so enjoyable, and appreciated, that an additional session has already been booked. So there will now be two Mahjong sessions a month going forwards. 2nd Wednesday of Month in the Town Hall Council Chamber as above, plus an additional session on 4th Wednesday of Month in the Town Hall Committee Room
