On Wednesday 9th September we had a good turnout of 12 players which meant we were able to play three tables. We are gaining confidence in the numerous routines but sometimes get confused by the number of tiles
we should hold in our hands. When we played on 23rd, we were grasping the method of how to count our tiles and when to declare that we were "CALLING".
We continue to enjoy a friendly and social atmosphere. We meet twice a month from 10.00am to 12.00pm in the Council Chamber on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. We had a good turnout of ten players at Mahjong for our August session, which gave us two good tables.. Mary, May, Annie and Gina each managed to collect complete Mahjongs. Annie 'drew' four flowers of the same colour, and May told us that this is known as a "bouquet" which has a value of 500 points !!
We are gaining confidence and feeling more relaxed about the various routines and sequences. Scoring still requires quite a lot of concentration. We had a most enjoyable session and look forward to improving even more next month.
On 22nd July, Mahjong was enjoyed by 10 players. A good turnout. Well done everyone. John explained, briefly, about "Chows" which involves a run of 3 tiles, however Annie was hoping to be allowed 4 consecutive
tiles. Not allowed! Sorry Annie. On the second table Tish had both of her own flowers, a "pung" and a hidden "kong" of honours giving 4 doubles. This resulted in an amazing record breaking score of 1124!! Well done Tish! We are all improving. Doing our best to remember whether to say “ pung " or “ kong " and working at calculating our own scores. We shall now meet twice a month from 10.00am to 12.00pm in the Council Chamber on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month except this August when the first meeting will be on
the 5th instead of the 12th. We then revert to pattern. There is a small charge of £2 for the room charge and refreshments.
Towards the end of the May Branch Meting, Edna and John Southey indicated that they would be interested in launching a Mahjong Group and asked for a show of hands to establish interest. Great interest was indeed shown, as demonstrated by many raised hands. A booking was made with the Town Hall, for Mahjong meetings to take place between 10.00am to 12.00noon in the Council Chamber on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. As always a small contribution will be needed, depending on numbers, to cover the cost of the room.
The first meeting of the new Mahjong Group did indeed take place on Wednesday 10th June. Nine eager new trainee members were introduced to the alien Mahjong playing pieces, and were taken through the esoteric, read complicated. rules of the game. Apparently the game starts by rebuilding the Great Wall of China, not to mention using such playing pieces as Bamboos, Winds, Characters, and moves to achieve known by easy to remember names such as Pung and Kong, and of course many more.
In spite of the above, a good time was certainly had by all, although the learning curve does seem a tad steep. In fact it was so enjoyable, and appreciated, that an additional session has already been booked. So there will now be two Mahjong sessions a month going forwards. 2nd Wednesday of Month in the Town Hall Council Chamber as above, plus an additional session on 4th Wednesday of Month in the Town Hall Committee Room.
